Gender Equality and Race Inclusion

Debbie Bartle – HYA Training E & D Co-ordinator attended the latest equality and diversity event held in Edinburgh.

GERI was formed to challenge stereotyping in careers information, advice, guidance and choice. The gender equality duty was introduced in 2007, this means that all UK public organisations must now demonstrate that they are eliminating sexual discrimination and harassment.

Debbie has collated her findings and knowledge from the event and presented the updates to HYA and CFL members.

Apprenticeship – Moving Forward with Life Long Learning

The Apprenticeship programme has now extended the criteria to meet any learner over 19+.  This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who is already employed and looking to further their career with a new or additional qualification. The take up for this has been great.  HYA have signed many learners of all ages (some up to retirement age!) and in many varied industry sectors,  we can see this growing from strength to strength.  To find out more, simply call Jo or Michelle at HYA Training.

Humber Apprentice Panel (HAP)

In September 2007 the Humber Apprentice Panel (HAP) wasformed, the panel has been made up of a diverse group of Apprentices from across the sub-region. Paula Kitching from HYA is currently on this panel, she is joined by 7 other Apprentices.

The panel gives Apprentices the chance to discuss their experiences as Apprentices and have their voices heard. It gives learners the opportunity to gain more confidence in discussing their futures and will help them to develop better communication & debating skills.

One of HAP’s main objectives is to help Apprentices from across the Humber Sub-Region communicate with one and other, to help achieve this HAP have devised a forum for Apprentices to discuss all aspects of their Apprenticeship. HAP has also created a Facebook & Myspace account to compliment the forum.

Vice Chair of the regional learner panel is Dave Thompson from the Consortium for Learning. Dave has just been named as runner-up in the first annual VQ Hero awards in the Young Learner of the year category.

Dave completed his Business and Administration Advanced Apprenticeship in just ten months, well ahead of schedule and overcoming the frustration of having dyslexia. The success has inspired Dave to continue his development and is currently working towards his Customer Service Advanced Apprenticeship with HYA Training.

Dave was presented with his certificate on stage by Alesha Dixon at London’s Royal Opera House in July 2008.

Invest in the best! - HYA Training is officially a great organisation to work for…

Following a recent reassessment HYA Training has retained full recognition as an Investor in People.  HYA first achieved the IiP standard 6 years ago and was reassessed under new, more challenging criteria in May 2007 and like previous visits, the interview evidence was 100% positive!

The report summarised that HYA continue to enjoy an excellent reputation and positive outcomes from its programmes.  Staff are positive, enthusiastic, highly motivated and flexible, which helps to facilitate the exceptionally well developed team working ethos.

Some staff comments:

“It’s a very supportive place.  They’re always mindful of our workload”

This is the most valued I’ve ever felt in any company I’ve worked for”

“Our opinions are considered – ideas are taken to the table and discussed thoroughly”

“Everyone pulls together to share the load”.  Teamwork is brilliant!”

The findings also highlighted areas of continued business improvement and good practice in… leadership and supportive management style, innovative approaches and genuine commitment to learning & development, high level of autonomy within job roles and the recognition of Customer First and Ali Grade 2 achievements in 2006.

Lynn McGowan, MD said: "I’m delighted we have achieved this recognition.  Our staff have worked extremely hard and it is great that our efforts have been acknowledged”.
