Health & Social Care
Does your child want to make a real difference to people’s lives? Then maybe a career in Health and Social Care could be for them! Caring for the elderly is becoming more and more important and employers must take on the right qualified staff.
If you choose a HYA Training Apprenticeship in Health & Social Care it will involve caring for the sick and elderly. You will normally work in a residential home or a day care centre. The work will be very demanding and challenging, but also satisfying and very rewarding.
Caring for the elderly you will need to show your employer you:
|
-
are reliable, mature and confident with other people
-
can be patient and tolerant
-
can deal with the public at all levels
|
HYA Training Programme - HYA offer training and support to candidates who are either currently working, or looking to work, in Residential Care. The Apprenticeship courses are work-based; this means the majority of your time will be spent learning the job while working with an employer. If you are not currently working in the care area, HYA Training can help find an employer willing to support your training.
The Apprenticeship itself is based around learning the skills connected with care duties and providing evidence of what you have done. The majority of this evidence will be collected in a portfolio, and will include items such as written work, observation reports and witness testimonies from supervisors etc. Once you have gained enough evidence to meet the criteria for the NVQ, it is verified by the awarding body, and you gain your qualification.
In order to help you achieve the qualification, training is given in the latest care practices, and in the different types of care duties such as personal care and moving & handling. This will give you theoretical and practical knowledge, to support your job role in the workplace. At HYA Training some of this may be done during 'off-the-job' training sessions at our training centre.
How it Works - Prior to starting the Apprenticeship all candidates undertake an initial assessment, which together with your previous qualifications and past experience, help determine the right level of Apprenticeship for you.
Candidates not already employed will be required to attend interviews with local employers until a suitable work placement has been secured.
Your HYA Training assessor, together with your work placement, will then help you plan a programme of development.
The Apprenticeship Framework - Health and Social Care Apprenticeships are aimed at staff working in a variety of residential environments, from care for the elderly, to caring for people with learning difficulties. (Unfortunately this course is not intended for candidates looking to go into the childcare area. This is covered by a separate NVQ qualification, which HYA Training does not currently deliver).
HYA Training offers the Health and Social Care Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeship.
*We also deliver the NVQ Level 4 and Registered Manager qualifications.
Apprenticeship - Is aimed at individuals whose training and work role involves carrying out a broad range of care duties, requiring a limited amount of supervision and working with some responsibility.
Advanced Apprenticeship - Is aimed at individuals whose training and work role involves carrying out care duties with a considerable amount of responsibility. The individual will be contributing to the development and implementation of care practices within the organisation, and have a substantial amount of experience working in a care environment.
As well as the NVQ, the Apprenticeship Framework includes: Key Skills Qualifications, which you may have already come across either through school or college. Key Skills have been designed to allow candidates to prove they also have the relevant employability skills needed in today's workplace; and cover the following areas:
-
communication
-
application of number
|
|
Key Skills are similar to NVQ's in that they are mainly evidence based and require candidates to show that they have reached the required national standard.
As well as Key Skills, candidates are also required to achieve 2 enhancements that can either be short courses or additional units from the Care or another NVQ.
Although this may seem like a lot of extra work on top of your NVQ, much of the evidence you collect will apply to both qualifications. HYA will help you decide which evidence is the most appropriate.
"Who can apply?" - Health and Social Care Apprenticeships are accessible free of charge to young people aged 17½ - 19. Other than this, HYA requires only a willingness to learn and a commitment to gaining quality experience with a local employer. You will also be asked to undergo pre-employments checks, which includes a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB).
NVQ qualifications are available to those aged 19 and over and we would be happy to discuss the options available to you.
